Measures taken by the Vienna subsidiary of the European Patent Office to ensure sustainability include the use of renewable energies and energy recycling. The climate-positive building uses a geothermal system with 20 geothermal probes and a heat pump. Any additional energy demand is covered by a large-scale PV system and an internal storage system. As a whole, this system creates a CO₂ sink, with the solar panels generating more energy than the building consumes. The surplus energy is fed into the power grid.

To heat and cool the extension, 20 GEROtherm^® DUPLEX geothermal probes were sunk to a depth of around 210 m.
